Designing Future BCIs: Beyond the Bit Rate

چکیده
The scope of this chapter is limited to applications where a Brain–Computer Interface (BCI) is used as an explicit interaction technique. In other words, we refer here to BCI as input which is voluntarily controlled by the user, rather than as an implicit interaction as in for mental or cognitive state monitoring. Designing applications using BCI as an explicit input technique for users with severe disability depends on understanding the control signals and how users can interact with systems using these controls. Although designing for able-bodied users has a different set of challenges, the BCI has to “add value” in both cases. Over the past 20 years of BCI research and design, the basic control functions have been realized by the collaboration of engineers, psychologists, machine learners and end users. These basic functions provide us with the freedom to design future BCI applications which are reliable in long-term use, easy to learn and set up, aesthetically pleasing, and have the potential to improve the lives of their users. BCI can be thought of as an input technology which takes properties of other emerging input technologies to the extreme. The term “extreme” is used because the BCI interaction is much slower, noisier and more error-prone compared to other input devices, and lacks proprioceptive feedback. Because of these unusual characteristics, a theoretical framework which successfully analyses current BCI systems provides a springboard for developing and refining theories and practices within Human Computer Interaction (HCI). Although still important, research in

Analysis of bit-rate definitions for Brain-Computer Interfaces
A comparison of different bit-rate definitions used in the Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) community is proposed; assumptions underlying those definitions and their limitations are discussed. Capacity estimates using Wolpaw and Nykopp bit-rates are computed for various published BCIs. It appears that only Nykopp's bit-rate is coherent with channel coding theory. Wolpaw's definition might lead to...
متن کاملDevelopment of a Brain Computer Interface (BCI) Speller System Based on SSVEP Signals
BCI is one of the most intriguing technologies among other HCI systems, mostly because of its capability of recording brain activities. Spelling BCIs, which help paralyzed people to maintain communication, are one of the striking topics in the field of BCI. In this scientific a spelling BCI system with high transfer rate and accuracy that uses SSVEP signals is proposed. In addition, we suggested...
متن کاملAdvancing Brain-Computer Interfaces for Robotic Embodiment Systems
Thanks to the rapid development of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), users can control and communicate with external devices without performing a single muscle movement. BCIs allow this by detecting the control and communication signals directly at their source, i.e. the brain. This renders BCIs highly applicable in different domains and of special importance to users with physical impairments....
متن کاملHigh-speed All- Optical Time Division Multiplexed Node
In future high-speed self-routing photonic networks based on all-optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) it is highly desirable to carry out packet switching, clock recovery and demultplexing in the optical domain in order to avoid the bottleneck due to the optoelectronics conversion. In this paper we propose a self-routing OTDM node structure composed of an all-optical router and demultiplex...
متن کاملA High-Speed Dual-Bit Parallel Adder based on Carbon Nanotube FET technology for use in arithmetic units
In this paper, a Dual-Bit Parallel Adder (DBPA) based on minority function using Carbon-Nanotube Field-Effect Transistor (CNFET) is proposed. The possibility of having several threshold voltage (Vt) levels by CNFETs leading to wide use of them in designing of digital circuits. The main goal of designing proposed DBPA is to reduce critical path delay in adder circuits. The proposed design positi...
